The LQBTQ community faces an existential threat in Africa. Several countries including Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda have criminalized same-sex relations with some even punishable by death. Of the 72 countries worldwide that criminalize homosexuality, 32 of them are in Africa, where punishments range from imprisonment to the death penalty in countries such as Mauritania and Sudan. These countries have nonchalantly declared war on the gay community. In light of the controversy surrounding LGBTQ rights at the Qatar world cup, we thought we’d shed some light on the situation on the continent.
